FAQ
are your eggs free range?
Actually, our hens produce free-run eggs. There are some very eager bald eagles and hawks that swoop past on a regular basis to check out what the girls are up to, so we like to keep them safe with a large, open run with a view of the harbour.
They do go out every day and spend the majority of their day outside – although some days they prefer the warm and dry coop.
Such is coastal living!
What does no-spray mean?
No spray means we do not use pesticides, herbicides, insecticides or fungicides on our produce or anywhere on the farm.
It requires more time and effort in manual weeding, and returns produce that is beautiful inside and out.
What is a CSA share?
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a great way to support your local farmers by purchasing a share of the harvest at the beginning of the growing season. This program spreads the risk more evenly between farmers and consumers and helps farmers plan for the growing season. And it lets you have a say in what is planted and ends up on your plate!
What is FISH leather?!?
Fish leather is tanned fish skins. Fish skins are cleaned and descaled and then submerged in non-chemical solutions rich in tannins like tea or bark. Once the skin is fully tanned it is oiled and worked to soften before becoming walleye wallets, halibut handbags or salmon slippers.
What grows best at 1790 West?
It actually seems to change each year. Depending on how severe the winter was, the ground may be warm earlier or later, impacting the length of season.
We’ve had a lot of success with beets, eggplants, tomatoes, and, of course zucchinis!
Who are the 3 sisters?
3 sisters planting – corn, squash and beans – is an indigenous tradition that harnesses the strengths of each plant. Corn grows early and tall, providing a strong stake for the beans to curl up along, while the squash’s leaves ensure that the soil retains moisture and keeps down weeds. The bean provides all important nitrogen-fixing which allows all three plants to thrive.
1790 West runs a 3 sister garden in rotation – in 2023 it will be at the front of the house so we can have long, leisurely chats every evening.
